Biografia

Paul Newman nasceu em 1925, em Ohio, EUA, e serviu na marinha, durante a segunda guerra. Formou-se também em Economia e estudou no Actors Studio. Debutou na Broadway, em “Picnic”. Depois disso as portas do mundo do cinema abriram-se para ele. Conseguiu um contrato com a Warner Bros, onde iniciou em “O cálice sagrado”, filme de 1954. Mas a grande oportunidade viria em “Marcado pela sarjeta”, de 1956.

Em 1958 casou-se com Joanne Woodward, de quem nunca se separou e com quem teve três filhas (já tinha três filhos de uma união anterior). Fez sucessos como Somebody up there likes me (1956) e Um de nós morrerá (onde fez Belly the Kid, papel que seria dado a James Dean caso este não tivesse morrido), Gata em teto de zinco quente (1958) ao lado de Liz Taylor, O Indomado (1963) e Rebeldia Indomável (1967). Dirigiu sua segunda esposa, Joanne Woodward, em Rachel Rachel (1968).

Durante a década de 60 continuou seu sucesso, com filmes como “Hud” (1962), “Cortina rasgada” (1966) e “Dois homens e um destino”, de 1969.

Na década de 70 diminuiu o ritmo no cinema, mas continuou trabalhando. Fundou uma instituição para pessoas doentes de câncer. Ativo na política como liberal, dono de um negócio de alimentos naturais e de uma equipe de automobilismo, manteve-se um astro e foi indicado 8 vezes ao Oscar. os últimos anos de sua vida ele vinha se dedicando a trabalhos filantrópicos, destinando grandes quantias para projetos diversos.
