Biografia

Filho de um funcionário dos Correios, Burt passou a infância em Harlem, um bairro pobre de Nova York, tornando-se jogador de basquete na Universidade de Nova York. Começou a se apresentar em circos como acrobata. Depois da 2ª Guerra, iniciou no teatro com a peça “The Sound of Hunting”, na Broadway, sendo convidado a fazer o filme “Os Assassinos”, de Robert Siodmak, em 1946. Seguiram-se: “Brutalidade”, “A Filha da Pecadora” e “Estranha Fascinação”.

Tinha preferência por filmes de ação e westers. Nos anos 50 sua popularidade era grande, com sucessos como “A um passo da Eternidade” (que tem uma das mais lembradas cenas de beijo do cinema) e “Trapézio”. Produziu “Marty”, que ganou o Oscar de Melhor filme em 1955.

Burt em Valdez Is Coming (1971) –

O ator ganhou o Oscar em “Entre Deus e o Pecado”, no papel de um caixeiro viajante, recebendo mais três indicações por “A Um Passo da Eternidade”, “O Homem de Alcatraz” e “Atlantic City”. Em 1962 recebeu o de Melhor Ator no Festival de Veneza, por seu papel em “O Homem Alcatraz”. O ator faleceu de um ataque cardíaco em 20/10//1994.
