Biografia

Michel Demitri Shalhoub, mais conhecido como Omar Sharif, nasceu em 20 de abril de 1932, na Alexandria, Egito, filho de pais judeus de ascendência libanesa. Formou-se na na Universidade do Cairo em matemática e física, chegando a trabalhar nos negócios do pai.
Sua carreira artística iniciou-se em 1953, no filme The Balzing Sun, um filme egípcio. Após diversos filmes em seu país, chegou em Hollywood, para estrelar seu primeiro filme em língua inglesa: Lawrence da Arábia, de 1962, desempenhando o papel do xerife Ali. Com o filme ele concorreu ao Oscar de Melhor Ator Coadjuvante e ganhou o Globo de Ouro de Ator Coadjuvante e Revelação Masculina. Seguiram-se o clássico Doutor Jivago, de David Lean e Funny Girl, onde trabalhou ao lado de Barbra Streisand. Omar fala fluentemente inglês, grego, francês, italiano e árabe.

Omar se arrependeu de ter feito o papel de Che Guevara em 1969 no filme homônimo. Isso porque, segundo o ator, o filme foi manipulado pela CIA (agência de inteligência americana). Ele chegou a afirmar que o filme foi o maior erro de sua vida.

Com uma carreira extensa, o ator ganhou o Globo de Ouro de melhor ator por Dr. Jivago e recentemente, em 2004 o prêmio de Melhor Ator no Festival de Veneza, pelo filme “Uma amizade sem fronteiras”.
