Biografia
Lionel Herbert Blythe nasceu na Filadélfia, em 28 de abril de 1878, filho dos atores Maurice Barrymore e Georgiana Drew. Foi o primeiro da família a aparecer no cinema, fazendo sua estréia em 1908 no filme mudo “The Paris Hat”, depois de ter morado por três anos em Paris. Após isso seu irmão John Barrymore e sua irmã Ethel também estreariam. Lionel trabalhou nos estúdios Biograph e também dirigiu vários filmes mudos, alguns com o jovem John Gilbert. Destaque para “The Copperherad” (1920) e “Sadie Thompson” (1928).
Dentre seus filmes mudos, destaque para Peter Ibbetson (1917), The Copperhead (1918), The Jest (1919), The Mysterious Island (1929) e A Free Soul (1931).
Lionel conseguiu fazer a transição para os filmes falados, e ganhou um Oscar da Academia por seu primeiro filme falado, “A Free Soul” (1931). Outros destaques desta época são Grand Hotel (1932), Rasputin and the Empress (1932), Captains Courageous (1937), The Valley of Decision (1945), Duel in the Sun (1947), e Key Largo (1948).
Na década de 40 sofreu um acidente e começou a sofrer de artrite, que acabou por levar-lhe para a cadeira de rodas.
Na vida pessoal sofreu a perda de duas filhas, mortas em tenra idade e casou-se duas vezes. Além de atuar e dirigir, Lionel também compôs algumas músicas, pintava e escrevia. Sua autobiografia “We Barrymores” foi escrita em 1951.
O ator morreu em 15 de novembro de 1954 na Califórnia.
Lionel é tio avô da atriz Drew Barrymore.
