Biografia

A família de Spencer é de origem irlandesa. Sua educação foi em colégios católicos, porém, seu espírito rebelde, desde cedo lhe trouxe problemas: foi expulso de 15 escolas. Depois da 1ª guerra mundial (ele foi do exército) começou a perceber seu verdadeiro dom. matriculou-se na Academia de Artes Dramáticas de NY, em 1922 e não parou mais.

Seu primeiro papel na Broadway veio nesse mesmo ano. No cinema estréia em 1930, em “Up the river” graças ao convite feito por John Ford. Daí para a frente começou a ser considerado um dos grandes trunfos da MGM. “Captans courageous” de 1937 e “Boys town”, de 38 tornaram-no a principal estrela do estúdio e lhe deram dois Oscars de melhor ator consecutivos. Teve no total 10 indicações ao Oscar.

Katherine Hepburn é considerada sua melhor parceira, tanto no lado de dentro, quanto de fora das telas. Juntos protagonizaram varios filmes de sucesso, como “O fogo sagrado” (1942), “A costela de Adão” (1949) e “A mulher absoluta”, dentre outros.
No filme ” Boom Town”, de 1940, contracenou com o grande Clark Gable e em O pai da noiva, brilha ao lado da ainda jovem Elizabeth Taylor.

Spencer é considerado um dos maiores dos atores americanos, pois soube, como poucos explorar os mais diversos tipos de gêneros. pencer morreu em 1967, depois de um longo período em que esteve doente. Hepburn esteve com ele até o último momento, cuidando e tratando dele.
