Biografia
Com 5 anos, Mary Pickford já encenava pequenos papéis. Aos 8, tornou-se a única provedora da família, quando a mãe ficou viúva. Adolescente, com seus cabelos cacheados e cara de boneca, foi para a Broadway e surpreendeu os diretores ao pedir trabalho dizendo que era “o pai da família”. Logo começou a pegar papéis maiores e, com seu talento natural para a comédia, transformou-se numa das estrelas mais amadas do cinema mudo. Dona de olhos expressivos, Mary também tinha um aguçado tino comercial.
A jovial Mary Pickford tinha 16 anos quando conheceu D.W. Griffith que lhe deu seu primeiro papel. Ela atuou no filme Pippa Passes (1909), baseado em um drama de Browning. As personagens de Mary inevitavelmente eram crianças ou adolescentes e a atriz logo transformou-se na Namoradinha da América, uma estrela que escolhia seus roteiristas e dava palpites até na direção e produção. Seu porte mignon possibilitou-a de fazer o filme Pollyanna (adolescente de 12) aos 27 anos de idade.
Com muito tino para negócios, fundou a United Artists Corporation com Charlie Chaplin, D. W. Griffith e seu marido, Douglas Fairbanks. O negócio começou a dar dinheiro, a tal ponto que Mary deixou as telas aos 40 anos, em 1933, como uma das mais bem-sucedidas empreendedoras do cinema, embora a United tenha sido vendida posteriormente.
