Biografia

Jerry Lewis (Joseph Levitch) já cantava nos palcos, junto com os pais aos 5 anos. Seus pais cantavam e tocavam em bares. Já crescido, passou a atuar em clubes noturnos. Aos 18 anos já era um profissional, e teve sua carreira impulsionada quando conheceu Dean Martin, com quem passou a formar uma dupla cômica. Tornaram-se populares, com números de dança e comédia. Duplas de contrastes sempre fizeram sucesso, podemos citar Charles Chaplin e Eric Campbell, O gordo e o magro. No caso de Dean e Jerry, tínhamos o cara boa praça e o descoordenado, desatento, desajeitado da dupla. Em 1949 os dois estreariam no cinema em “My friend Irma”. Seguiram-se vários filmes em seqüência, até que em 1956 a dupla se desfez, quando Jerry resolve atuar sozinho. Com o controle, ele passou a dirigir e a produzir alguns dos seus filmes, e seguiu com grande popularidade durante os anos 60, com filmes como “O professor aloprado” (1963), em que interpreta um professor feíssimo, mas que descobre uma fórmula para se tornar um homem atrativo. A segunda versão deste filme, protagonizada por Eddy Murphy teve a produção do comediante. A partir do final da década, sua carreira começou a minguar. Durante os anos 60 e 70 Lewis começou a trabalhar em causas beneficentes e escreveu sua biografia “Jerry Lewis”. Em 1983 foi chamado por Martin Scorsese para fazer “O rei da comédia”, ao lado de Robert de Niro. O resultado foi um show de interpretação, no papel do ansioso e suado anfritião de um programa de entrevistas. Na década de 90 trabalhou na Broadway em “Damn yankees”, e começou a se dedicar à UNICEF. Em 1998 recebeu um prêmio pela sua trajetória da Associação americana de comediantes.
