Biografia

Ator, diretor, cantor e um dos dois maiores coreógrafos que o mundo das artes já conheceu. Nasceu em 1912 em Pittsburgh, tendo estudado Economia antes de começar a dançar em 1937, com seu irmão Fred. Em 1937 ele estreava na Broadway com a peça “Leave It To me”. Poucos anos depois foi visto pelo produtor David O. Selzinick, e convidado a estrelar um musical ao lado de Judy Garland. Foi em 1942, no filme “For me and my gal”. Em seguida vieram sucessos como Pilot n. 5, Du Barry Was a Lady e Thousands Cheer. Em 1945 Gene recebeu sua primeira indicação ao Oscar de melhor ator, por seu papel em Marujos do Amor, Ziegfeld Follies, Living in a Big Way, Pirate, Três Mosqueteiros, Summer Stock, e outros. Em 1951, uniu-se a Vincent Minelli para fazer Sinfonia de Paris, um filme “desenhado” nos mínimos detalhes, e que acabou levando 7 Oscars no ano. Gene ganhou um prêmio especial por sua versatilidade como ator, cantor e dançarino.

Seu maior sucesso sem dúvida alguma é Singin in the rain, a história baseada na passagem do cinema mudo para o falado, com altas doses de comédia e romance. A imagem do cantor sapateando no meio da chuva é sem dúvida alguma uma das mais famosas da história do cinema.

Depois do sucesso estrondoso de Singin in the rain, Gene mudou-se para a Alemanha e depois para a Inglaterra. Quando voltou aos Estados Unidos sua carreira já não era a mesma: fez alguns filmes como Brigadoon, dirigiu It’s always fair weather e também The Happy Road. Em 1957 foi dispensado pela MGM, que não tinha mais planos de fazer musicais. Suas aparições nas telas ficariam cada vez mais escassas, mesmo dirigindo ou atuando em alguns filmes. 1980 trouxe seu último filme, Xanadu, ao lado de Olívia Newton John. Dentre as estrelas e astros que dançaram com ele estão Cyd Charisse, Judy Garland, Rita Hayworth, The Nicholas Brothers, Frank Sinatra, Natalie Wood, Fred Astaire, Debbie Reynolds, Vera Ellen e Donald O’Connor. Na década de 90 chegou a ser consultor de dança da cantora Madonna, em sua turnê Girl Show.
