Biografia

 

Alfred nasceu em 13 de agosto de 1899, em Londres. Seus pais eram católicos fervorosos, e o educaram na igreja desde cedo. Aliás,  segundo o cineasta, foi na escola jesuíta que ele aprendeu o sentido da palavra medo. Já em idade adulta teve que abandonar a universidade para sustentar a família trabalhando em uma fábrica. De lá passou para o setor de publicidade.

O cineasta entrou para o cinema por volta de 1920, trabalhando com roteiros, quando os estudos Famous Players Lasky inauguraram uma filial em Londres. Depois disso não parou mais, tornando-se assistente de direção. Foi assim que dirigiu primeiramente “The pleasure garden” (rodado na Alemanha) de 1925. Em 1925 veio seu primeiro sucesso: The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog, onde iniciaria também uma de suas marcas: a aparição em determinado momento do filme. A partir daí começou a chamar a atenção. Em 1926 já começava a aproximar-se do gênero que o consagrou, com “The mountain egle”. “Blackmail” de 1929 era para ser um filme mudo, mas depois tornou-se o primeiro filme falado na Grã-Bretanha. Começava a ser considerado um gênio.

Durante os anos 30 sua carreira tomou grandes proporções. Foi nessa década que grandes suspenses foram feitos, como “O homem que sabia demais” (1934), “Os 39 graus” (1935) e “A mulher oculta”, de 1938. Em 1940, depois de sua chegada à América, fazia “Rebecca, a mulher inesquecível”, fruto do contrato que assinou com David Selznick. Com esse filme ele ganhou o Oscar. “Um corpo que cai”, que foi feito com Kim Novak e James Stewart foi e é considerado o maior suspense da história do cinema. Dentre títulos famosos, podemos destacar “Sabotador”, “A sombra de uma dúvida”, “Pacto sinistro” (que tratava de um crime perfeito), “Janela indiscreta” (a história de um fotógrafo que desconfiava que seu vizinho era um assassino), “Os pássaros” (que eram na verdade os vilões), “Psicose” (o filme da famosa cena do chuveiro), “Um corpo que cai”, dentre tantos outros sucessos.

Na vida privada, casou-se uma única vez, com Alma Reville, no ano de 1926. eles se conheceram na companhia onde ele trabalhava. Alma era roteirista também na Paramount’s Famous Players-Laskey e o casal teve uma única filha, Patricia. Seu nome apareceu nos créditos de muitas obras de Hichcock. Além disso era muito, mas muito tímido, e adorava viajar e filmar essas viagens.

Ele soube, melhor do que ninguém, aproveitar do que o cinema lhe permitia fazer. Mestre do suspense, é também um homem de palavras fortes, que muitas vezes magoava por ser rude (porém educado). Mas apesar disso, todos desejavam trabalhar ao seu lado. Uma das características era aparecer fazendo uma ponta em cada filme seu. Um diretor magnífico. O diretor faleceu em 29 de abril de 1980.
